Philosophy of Teaching and Learning

Why do I teach?

Because I revel in the exhilarating moments when children say "Oh, I get it!"   In those moments, my passion for teaching becomes tangible.

What I believe...

  • Learning is essential to growth, it is lifelong and has no boundaries
  • Every child can learn
  • In knowing each unique learner and their own unique needs and learning styles
  • Critical reflection is a powerful professional development tool for teachers
  • Children have the right to feel safe, happy and respected at school
  • Optimal education is achieved through a working partnership with students and their families
  • In high standards
  • In learning to learn
  • Wonderment and awe
  • Children's inquiring minds naturally lead to exploration
  • A strong foundation in Literacy and Numeracy are critical
  • Teachers achieve more when they work together as a team

Therefore...

  • I understand the importance of inspiring students
  • Students in my class lead and own their learning through goal setting, reflection, self and peer assessment
  • My programmes are well planned, tight and structured
  • Students in my class are participators, contributors, risk-takers, team players, problem-solvers, self-managers and thinkers
  • My students experience frequent success
  • If a student is not succeeding, I tailor my teaching to their learning style
  • Nurturing a growth mindset empowers children to learn and grow
  • I understand the importance of building relationships
  • I endeavour to get to know each child's story and culture so I can genuinely share in their learning journey
  • I use robust assessment and evaluation practices to identify strengths and weaknesses
  • I use critical inquiry and reflection to refine my teaching practice and continually evolve
  • "Education is not preparation for life, education is life itself" John Dewey
